Home-use oral hygiene products: mouthrinses
JOHN M. MORAN
Chlorhexidine mouthrinse may have beneficial effects in individuals who cannot brush their teeth effectively or who had simply used the rinse without any professional intervention, such as cleaning or provision of oral hygiene advice. In this context a beneficial effect was seen in a group of factory workers who, under supervision, used a chlorhexidine rinse for 3 months. A reduction in established gingivitis after a period of 3 months was noted but no measurable effect was observed on the amount of plaque present (29). It may be concluded that chlorhexidine does appear to have a significant effect on untreated gingivitis but the resolution of inflammation may be facilitated much more readily by undertaking professional cleaning and an improvement in oral hygiene.
